What Is a SAP Evaluation?

A SAP Evaluation is a mandated assessment conducted after a DOT drug or alcohol violation. During the evaluation, the SAP reviews the circumstances of the violation, substance use history, and other relevant information to determine what education or treatment is required before a return to duty is permitted.

Important

SAP evaluations are not optional. Federal regulations require completion of the SAP process before an individual can return to any DOT-regulated safety-sensitive position.

Who Needs a SAP Evaluation?

You may need a SAP Evaluation if you work in a safety-sensitive role and have:

Failed a DOT drug or alcohol test
Recorded an on-duty alcohol test result of 0.04 or higher
Refused a DOT drug or alcohol test
Violated other DOT drug or alcohol regulations

SAP evaluations apply to individuals in roles such as commercial driving, transit operations, aviation, railroad, pipeline, and other DOT-regulated positions.

The SAP Evaluation Process

1

Initial SAP Evaluation

Meet with our DOT-qualified SAP for an in-depth assessment. We review your violation, background information, and substance use history to determine appropriate next steps.

2

Education or Treatment Recommendation

Based on the evaluation, the SAP will recommend a specific course of education or treatment. This recommendation must be completed exactly as outlined to continue the Return-to-Duty process.

3

Follow-Up SAP Evaluation

After completing the recommended education or treatment, return to the SAP for a follow-up evaluation. The SAP confirms whether all requirements have been met.

4

Return-to-Duty & Follow-Up Testing

Once cleared by the SAP, your employer may schedule a Return-to-Duty test. Additional follow-up testing may be required over a defined period, as determined by the SAP.
